Why do politicians have to raise money?

For example, Joe the Plumber has only $1500.00, but I like what he promises to do when he is in office. His opponent has $46 Million, but voting for this person will turn America into a Communist Society. I would much rather vote for a poor middle cl worker for office than a rich commie. I can really care less how much money someone has, just as long as they have an agenda that will be beneficial for our country.
