How much should I tip a doorman/bellhop?

I'm going to stay at one of the Hilton Hotels in Montreal, where they have these people. I simply have no idea how much to tip them. I don't want to seem rude, and I don't want to spend too much. So what's a fair price? And when do I tip them?
